5 questions with comedian Melissa Doran

Melissa Doran is one of the most popular and successful comics in the Louisville scene. She will be headlining a comedy show March 18 at Aloft Louisville Downtown.

Melissa recently took the time to answer some questions from Creig Ewing.

What has it been like doing comedy during Covid?

Comedy during covid has been pretty much non-existent. Because shows are so few and far between for such long stretches of time it is a challenge to do well every time you get on stage.

But it also reinvigorated me.

I realized how much I love this thing to do it and do so poorly again. I really connect with what you must go through when you perform Creig.

You recently moved to Louisville. How’s that going?

I recently moved to Louisville with my now fiance after not living with a man for almost 14 years. I made sure we lived on the 11th floor so I always have an out.

I was living in southern Indiana before this so I feel like I’m basically living in the epicenter of culture and diversity. Comparatively.

How would you describe your comedy?

Wow. These questions are super compelling. On that note I’d say my comedy is sarcastic. I try to be authentic but I also like the classic art of writing  jokes.

My favorite thing about stand-up is connecting with the audience. I like to feel like we’re hanging out, having a drink and forgetting our bullshit for a night.

What jokes of yours do people remember best?

I do a Derby joke that is always very popular in Louisville for obvious reasons. I also slam on southern Indiana pretty hard, which Louisville also seems to like.

If you’ve ever been there that is also for obvious reasons.

West End Pookie is also on the show March 18. What is her comedy like?

The times I’ve seen West End Pookie she’s always been clever and extremely authentic. She doesn’t hold back and her energy is electric.

She’ll make you laugh just with her presence. That’s the sign of a truly good comedian.

Tickets for the Thursday Comedy Night show from Louisville Laughs are $10 or $30 for a reserved table that seats up to four. Tickets are available here.

5 Questions with comedian Holly Lynnea

Get to know Louisville comedian Holly Lynnea.

Holly Lynnea is a comedian, writer, actor and dancer from Louisville, who has performed comedy across the US and Canada.

She will be appearing on Feb. 28 and 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Four Pegs Beer Lounge in Germantown along with comedian Tim Northern. Tickets are available at louisvilletickets.com

Holly recently answered five questions from Creig Ewing of Louisville Is Funny.

You’re from Louisville. So first question is what school did you go to?

Holly: Fern Creek High School

You are coming off a couple weeks of shows in Colorado. How did those go? Do the clubs have a two-edible minimum?

Colorado shows were great! I performed at Comedy Works a couple of times and at LOTS of breweries and bars in multiple cities. All shows we’re packed venues, even in a foot of snow!

Two edible minimum? Thank God, they don’t!

What are some of the writing and TV projects you have going on?

I’ve got a pilot I just started. I’m really excited about it, and some acting collaborations in the works. All Hollywood hush hush.

Not only are you a comedian, writer and actor, but you also have a background in dance. How does that help you on stage?

Teaching ballroom in group settings and using humor to take the sting/awkwardness out of uncomfortable situations we all deal with … tapping into that, is how dance has played a role in my stage show.

Tell us about a really bad show you remember.

It was a show in a church basement, there was clouds of weed smoke in the air and plenty of liquor on the tables. Let’s just say, that show did not go well. I was less than two years in comedy and I did not get a lot of laughs, but a whole lot of teeth sucking.

Kentucky vs. Louisville fans

I used to work in the sports department at the Louisville Courier-Journal. That was a challenge. People in Kentucky are crazy about college sports.

I would take calls from readers all the time.

UofL fans might ask, “Why didn’t you have anything on the Cards on the sports front today?”

I’d say something like, “It’s a slow time for UofL, and we try to give the writer a day off. We have a story coming tomorrow.”

They think they have you then.

“You had a story on UK on the front. I guess your UK writer doesn’t get the day off.”

But I was ready.

“Well, UK won the basketball championship last night. So …”

Their response was always the same.

“Y’all should just move to Lexington!”

Slam!

UofL fans are hard on their smartphones.

UK fans are just as unreasonable, though.

They think everything UK does is more important than mouth breathing.

They only thing they like better than a UK victory is a UofL scandal.

So they have been really happy lately, actually.

A UK fan might call and complain that UK’s victory against Winthrop got a smaller photo than UofL’s victory over Duke.

When you explain that the UofL-Duke game was a better matchup, they get mad.

“Y’all should just move to Louisville.”

Slam!
