6 questions with Louisville comedian Creig Ewing

Creig Ewing / Photo by Lou Tingle

Creig Ewing is a comedian and show producer from Louisville, Ky.

He is the force behind Louisville Laughs, putting on shows at Aloft Louisville Downtown and scheduling the Wednesday night Laughs in the Lounge open mic at The Caravan Comedy Club.

With businesses opening up, Louisville Laughs is adding Sunday shows at Planet of the Tapes, The Bard’s Town, an open mic at Ten20 Craft Brewery and more announcements to come.

The initial Planet of the Tapes Second Sunday Showcase is June 13 at 7:30 p.m. featuring nationally touring comedian Tim Northern. Tickets are available here.

And as a reward for reading this far, you can use the Promo Code PLANET to get $3 off general admission tickets for Sunday’s show, which are regularly $8.

Creig recently put off his afternoon nap to answer questions he asked himself.

Louisville Laughs: What made you decide to start putting on shows?

Creig Ewing: Who else was going to book me? Plus, I thought I would get my bar tab covered. I was wrong.

What is the best feeling in comedy?

A full room of people enjoying themselves and people laughing at a new joke you’re trying out are the best feelings. … So I am told.

What’s the most frustrating part about booking shows?

People like to wait until the day of the show to buy tickets. So it’s nerve-wracking to not know if you’re going to be performing in front of six or 60 people.

Tim Northern is on Sunday’s show at Planet of the Tapes. How do you know Tim?

When I started in comedy, one of the first opportunities I got was to perform in The Tim Northern Comedy Festival. Tim, who has been doing comedy for years and been on network TV, is very encouraging to the Louisville comedy scene. The festival, to him, was all about supporting and showcasing Louisville comics.

The next year I started working with Tim and others to put on the festival and produce shows and open mics. Covid put everything on hiatus, but we are back putting on shows and people are really ready for comedy.

Tim also is one of those comics who has really smart jokes that I wish I had written.

What tips do you have for new comics wanting to get stage time?

Go to open mics and work on your material. You only get better by being on stage. Don’t fall in love with your jokes. Always be willing to tighten them, rework them or add tags.

Be a good audience member. If you’re at an open mic, stay to listen to the other comics. Laugh. Network a little after.

Go to comedy shows to support others. If someone offers you a spot, don’t say you can do 20 minutes if you only have five. Be reliable.

Also, watch what you put on social media. If you seem like a jerk on your Facebook page, who is going to want to put you on a show?

How do you write a joke?

Take something that is true and lie about it.

Sometimes people have a true story that is funny, and they feel compelled to tell the whole story. Shorten it. Get to the funny parts. Embellish. Go over the top.

A five-minute story with a punchline at the end is going to lose the audience before you get to the punchline.

When someone tells a long stories with no laughs, Tim Northern says, “That guy was up there telling truths.”

Tim tours nationally, but tries to stop at Uranus, Missouri, whenever he can. He has appeared on Star Search and Last Comic Standing and is the namesake for the Tim Northern Comedy Festival held in Louisville.

Tickets for the show are $8 for general admission and $20 for a table that seats up to three. Tickets are available here.

Also on the show are: Nolan Miller from Indianapolis, Jerrel Beamon from Dayton, Louisville’s Hillary Boston, Alex Whittenburg, Jen Cooper, Kimberly Freeman and Jake Hovis and host Creig Ewing.

Planet of the Tapes is the coolest new performances space in Louisville, combining a Comedy Theatre, full-service bar, Cinema Lounge and even old-school movie rentals.

5 Questions with comedian Holly Lynnea

Get to know Louisville comedian Holly Lynnea.

Holly Lynnea is a comedian, writer, actor and dancer from Louisville, who has performed comedy across the US and Canada.

She will be appearing on Feb. 28 and 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Four Pegs Beer Lounge in Germantown along with comedian Tim Northern. Tickets are available at louisvilletickets.com

Holly recently answered five questions from Creig Ewing of Louisville Is Funny.

You’re from Louisville. So first question is what school did you go to?

Holly: Fern Creek High School

You are coming off a couple weeks of shows in Colorado. How did those go? Do the clubs have a two-edible minimum?

Colorado shows were great! I performed at Comedy Works a couple of times and at LOTS of breweries and bars in multiple cities. All shows we’re packed venues, even in a foot of snow!

Two edible minimum? Thank God, they don’t!

What are some of the writing and TV projects you have going on?

I’ve got a pilot I just started. I’m really excited about it, and some acting collaborations in the works. All Hollywood hush hush.

Not only are you a comedian, writer and actor, but you also have a background in dance. How does that help you on stage?

Teaching ballroom in group settings and using humor to take the sting/awkwardness out of uncomfortable situations we all deal with … tapping into that, is how dance has played a role in my stage show.

Tell us about a really bad show you remember.

It was a show in a church basement, there was clouds of weed smoke in the air and plenty of liquor on the tables. Let’s just say, that show did not go well. I was less than two years in comedy and I did not get a lot of laughs, but a whole lot of teeth sucking.

Kentucky vs. Louisville fans

I used to work in the sports department at the Louisville Courier-Journal. That was a challenge. People in Kentucky are crazy about college sports.

I would take calls from readers all the time.

UofL fans might ask, “Why didn’t you have anything on the Cards on the sports front today?”

I’d say something like, “It’s a slow time for UofL, and we try to give the writer a day off. We have a story coming tomorrow.”

They think they have you then.

“You had a story on UK on the front. I guess your UK writer doesn’t get the day off.”

But I was ready.

“Well, UK won the basketball championship last night. So …”

Their response was always the same.

“Y’all should just move to Lexington!”

Slam!

UofL fans are hard on their smartphones.

UK fans are just as unreasonable, though.

They think everything UK does is more important than mouth breathing.

They only thing they like better than a UK victory is a UofL scandal.

So they have been really happy lately, actually.

A UK fan might call and complain that UK’s victory against Winthrop got a smaller photo than UofL’s victory over Duke.

When you explain that the UofL-Duke game was a better matchup, they get mad.

“Y’all should just move to Louisville.”

Slam!
