5 habits comics should adopt to succeed in standup

Standup comedy is a wild form art form. Virtually all of your practice and learning is done on stage before an audience. Imagine buying a used guitar, going straight to a bar and playing Smoke on the Water to 50 open-mouthed people. But that’s standup.

The fact that you learn as you go is one reason people are terrified to try. It’s so intimidating that doing a set at an open mic is a popular punishment for guys who finish last in their fantasy football league.

But if you have the bug, its intoxicating. Remember, though, as you get on stage and start to get laughs, you are still learning. Don’t burn bridges early on.

Here are some habits you might consider adopting:

BE PATIENT

Terrific! You managed to stand on stage telling jokes for 3 minutes at your first open mic. That doesn’t mean you’re ready for an agent.

It takes most people years to build up their material and stage presence to the point that they can even feature at a comedy club.

For your first year, work on adding to your collection of jokes that work and getting more comfortable on stage.

Don’t get down because you’ve been doing comedy for three months and no one is booking you.

It’s frustrating when others that don’t seem as funny are getting booked. But focus on you. The more you get on stage and refine your material, the better you get, and people will notice.

Also, slow your roll. It’s tempting to put your first standup video on the Internet to share with the world. I’d suggest waiting. You’re just going to get better.

Heading out of town to mics and shows is a great idea to network and get more experience, but wait until you feel really good about your five minutes so you make a good impression in another city.

BE LISTENING

In standup, you have to be confident. If you aren’t sure your jokes are funny, the audience definitely won’t think so.

You have to go on stage with swagger. However, you need to listen to the audience. Are they laughing at your punchlines?

When you do open mics, this is the feedback you are looking for. Do your jokes work or not? If a bit routinely fails, you need to change it up or ditch it.

Record your sets and listen back objectively. A joke isn’t successful because — there it is! — one person laughed at your punchline. You want most everyone laughing.

So many comics have blinders on and seem to think they did well, when the audience sure didn’t think so.

Don’t make excuses for your jokes or fall in love with them. I hear comics all the time tell a joke that bombs and say they like that joke and the audience never does. That means you should drop it. The audience ultimately decides what’s funny.

Also be open to feedback — especially if it’s solicited — and take it for what it’s worth. Most comics only want to hear they had a great set. If you are willing to accept you have things you could improve, you have an advantage.

If you don’t know where in your set the audience should be laughing, you need to look at how your material is structured. The most common joke form is premise/setup and punchline. Some comics are out there doing premise, premise, premise with no punchlines.

If you think that the audience should be laughing non-stop because the premise is so funny, you will be disappointed. Standup does not work that way.

BE EASY TO WORK WITH

Be a good member of the comedy scene in your area.

It’s a pretty low bar. If you can keep from sexually harassing other comics or the staff and avoid getting arrested, you’ve already got a leg up in a lot of scenes.

Don’t be the comic that wants a little extra time whenever you’re on stage and claims to never see the light that signals their time is up.

You pull that enough and no one wants to put you on a show.

Be on time and follow the venue’s rules for language and content.

Don’t pull any fast ones like trying to get a guest spot by saying the headliner has vouched for you when you have never talked to the headliner.

Treat the staff at clubs and venues well. These people may decide if you get a spot.

If you are constantly late or pushing boundaries, people will not be eager to work with you.

BE RESPONSIVE

If your goal is to becoming a working comic or at least get paid to do comedy, be easy to contact.

Make sure you have social media accounts, especially Facebook and Instagram, that include your name and a photo of you. Your email should ideally include your name.

Often, especially for comics just starting to be considered for guest spots or hosting spots, the opportunities come out of the blue. The club needs a host that night or hast a guest spot available. The first comic who responds gets the gig.

If you don’t check your emails or messages or texts for days or weeks, bookers are going to stop bothering with you.

Even if I am booking a show three months out, if I don’t hear from you in a week, I’m moving on.

BE READY

You have a solid 5 minutes plus. You’ve networked across the region. A few headliners will vouch for you.

Congrats! You’re ready to reach out to ask for gigs.

You ditched your nasty69@college.edu email and have yourname@gmail.com email.

You have a headshot that’s in focus with a plain background and not some grainy photo of you on stage in front of the Gary’s Guffaws logo.

You have a solid 5-minute video to send out.

You got this!

Good luck!

How do I get booked on Louisville Laughs shows?

If you’re interested in getting booked on Louisville Laughs shows, here are some tips for getting on shows.

Do well on the Wednesday Caravan mics or Louisville Laughs mics

If I don’t see you perform, you will not be at top of mind when shows are put together.

We’d love to see you on one of our mics or other events. You can sign up for a Caravan spot by emailing CaravanOpenMic@gmail.com.

Louisville Laughs has three open mics for December. You can check them out here and sign up.

I often book comics who do well at mics. Doing “well” means consistently getting laughs, appearing comfortable and in control on stage and having unique material.

If you aren’t there yet, keep working before asking about a paid spot.

Perform in our contests

Another option to be seen and booked is to be in one of our contests. I know. Not everyone likes contests or competing, but it’s one way to be perform in front of a good crowd.

The Caravan Comedy Contest starts Jan. 2. Some spots are available. You can register here.

I admit I feel a little bad about charging people $25 to be in contests, but all that goes to prize money.

I also have seen that if people don’t have some skin in the game, about 25% to 33% of comics will just not show up, and that makes for poor shows.

Be able to work cleanish

Some audience members get turned off if comics rely on steady streams of jokes about porn and your penis size.

I may think you are hilarious but just too dirty for shows with a general audience.

Also, if you have material that makes fun of groups of people, I don’t want audience members upset and offended.

Have unique material

I like comics who let the audience see into their lives and weird world views.

When you are doing jokes about common topics like airplane food or dating apps, you are venturing into areas that many comics have trod, so your jokes better be really good.

When bookers are trying to put together a lineup, it helps if your material is memorable.

I prefer diverse shows that aren’t a parade of comics that look alike doing the same kind of stuff.

This is not a knock on the many shows that are six bald, white guys wearing flannel, as a bald white guy who wears flannel.

Be consistently funny

Some comics have material that works great for certain crowds but not others. Other comics have material that might light up a room if people are into it but gets nothing if they aren’t.

Other wing it and get the room rocking one time and not other times.

I prefer comics that can get laughs no matter the situation.

Be a draw or get people out

Hey, if you can get people out to shows, that’s awesome. Comics who are a draw or newer comics who can bring audience members have an advantage.

If you don’t have a TikTok following and have burned out all your friends and family members already, I appreciate comics who at least help to promote shows they are on.

Don’t be oversaturated in one city

I may think you’re one of Louisville’s best comics, but if I see you on shows all over town all the time, I am less likely to book you.

I’m trying to get people in the audience, and if they have already seen you twice this month, I’m less inclined to ask you on a show.

Be easy to work with

You’re on time. You don’t run the light. You don’t get too drunk or high to perform.

Y0u don’t have drama and beef with other comics. Everyone feels comfortable with you around.

Act like you’re serious about comedy

It’s cool if you just want to do open mics as a hobby. But if you want to get on other shows, I want to see that you’re working on new material and at least put on a clean shirt.

Be around

Comedy can be like real estate. Location. Location. Location. If you show up to just watch a show, you might get invited to do a spot or get booked on an upcoming show.

Out of sight, out of mind is a thing in comedy too.

Ask for a spot

Sometimes all you have to do is ask. Whenever you reach out about being booked on a show, it helps to have a decent photo of yourself and a video to prove how funny you are.

But don’t be a pest. Some comics get a reputation for asking for spots so often it’s annoying.

Comedy is hard on stage and off.

Good luck!

Comedy tip from Louisville Laughs: Don’t do this when promoting shows

By Creig Ewing

One thing every comedy club manager or show booker sweats over daily is how many people are going to going be in the audience.

Not every comic has a following that can fill rooms, but everyone can promote shows.

Bookers love when comics pitch in and promote shows successfully, but they hate it when comics make promotional posts that seem designed to sabotage shows.

Please promote your comedy shows, but don’t do these things, which I see all too often:

Say the show is going to be filled with vile debauchery

Unless you are the headliner, you don’t speak for the show. You are one comic on it.

Believe it or not, some people may not want to go to a showcase if they believe all the comics will be exploring bestiality or whatever your thing is.

You can speak for yourself and what a wild and crazy person you are, but you don’t speak for all the comics on the show.

Be overly humble

Self-effacing humor can work well on stage, but not so much when promoting.

I see posts like this all the time:

“I may not be funny and I don’t know if any of these other comics are, but come out anyway, spend $10 and find out.”

You think that’s how P.T. Barnum drummed up a crowd?

Act like you’re excited about the show and assume that it will be a good time.

Promote just to comics

People post their shows in Facebook groups specifically for comics all the time. They also promote open mics with the goal of just getting comics to be there.

Give comics a heads up, but promote the shows to potential audience members. If you can get actual audience members to your open mics, you won’t have any trouble getting comics to show up.

Wait until the day of the show to promote

Sure, a lot of tickets are sold the day of shows, unfortunately. But you should start promoting shows at least a week out. You want to get the show in people’s minds before they make other plans.

Promote multiple shows at once

A post listing all your upcoming shows or your open mic “tour” are fine. But if you have a couple shows in a week at different places promote them separately.

If the promoter gave you a flyer for a show, and you use that flyer and also mention that you’re also at another show in town and give details on that, the booker who made the flyer is not going to like that. Trust me.

Post your shows separately, it’s more effective anyway.

Guilt people into coming to a show

Another common post is asking people to come to a show to “support local comedy.” That’s like asking for people to come to your daughter’s third-grade dance recital.

Encourage people to come to the show because they are going to laugh and have fun.

What you SHOULD do to promote

When anyone posts about a show you’re a part of or a venue you want to support, interact with the post — like it, comment, whatever, to increase the engagement for the post.

Post on multiple social media apps — Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.

Don’t limit your promoting to simply sharing someone else’s post about the event. Write your own post. You’re a creative person, right?

Create a video promoting a show if that’s your thing.

If you get a flyer with your image on it from the promoter, use it. Improve on it even.

If social media is not your thing, text people, email, post flyers around town.

Have a great show! Hope it sells out, you dog-diddler!
