Comedy tip from Louisville Laughs: Take a break to write

By Creig Ewing

You’ve got your tight five minutes down pat but you need more material to get booked as a host or feature, so you need to do some writing.

You have to live your life to find material, but you also need some quiet time to think, process everything and get those jokes down on paper or into your iPhone.

Think about it. Would JK Rowling had written the Harry Potter series if she was out harassing trans folks instead of sitting quietly at a coffee shop? No!

If all you do is spend time scrolling on your phone, you’ll show up at the open mic with the same 100 men vs a gorilla material as half the other open micers.

Live your life. Find material in the absurdities of your life.

Then unplug and take some time to think, reflect and write. Shut the door. Turn off the TV. Walk the dog.

Whatever works for you to let your brain do its thing.

Good luck.
