5 questions with Cincinnati comedian Gabe Kea

Gabe Kea is a comedian from Cincinnati, who will be in Louisville as the featured comic for a show at Planet of the Tapes on Sunday.

Gabe has toured the country, making people laugh in comedy clubs and college campuses.

He will close out the Second Sunday Showcase on July 11 at 7:30 p.m. Other comics on the show include Shawn Braley of Cincinnati; Kate Murphy and Steven Wilber, recent transplants from Portland, Ore.; and Louisvillians Jordan Goodwin, Eric Groovely, Erika Avery, Rich Enright and host June Dempsey.

Tickets are $8 and are available here.

Gabe recently took the time to answer 5 Questions from Louisville Laughs.

You have performed across the country.  Do you have a favorite venue that is closed?

There are so many comedy venues where I have performed that are now closed. It’s hard to pick a favorite. I would have to say my favorite venue that is now out of business would have to be the Louisville Improv. That bed in the comedy condo could be the softest most comfortable mattress I ever slept on.

But Deja Vu comedy club in Columbia, MO, is probably my all-time favorite closed comedy venue. I worked with so many great comedians there. I got to open for Tom Wilson (‘Biff’ from Back to the Future) he opened with a ping pong ball bit. It was the greatest! He is a legend!

You have appeared at a lot of colleges. How are college crowds different from club crowds?

The main difference with college crowds it is just a more specific demographic … obviously young students. There is more of a mix of different groups of people in the club environment.

Also, the first time I ever saw live stand up comedy was when I was in college. Kevin Meaney came to my school and did a show. It was great! He was great. I got to hang out with him after the show. He thought he bombed, I thought he did excellent.  That was my first time ever experiencing live stand up comedy, which is good to remember from a performers perspective going into a comedy show at a college.

Your audience is young kids that may have never seen live comedy before. This idea that you cannot say certain things to a college audience is almost always coming from the same type of person, an old person.  Its usually someone that is famous for being on television 30 years ago who says you cannot say anything in front of these kids.

What is your comedy horror story?

Every comedy horror story for me is when you are headlining and no one shows up for the show. Or worse than that — if only four people show up and they are all your ex-girlfriends, or your in-laws, or a friend from school, or your neighbor that doesn’t talk to you anymore because you put “It’s Over” in Christmas lights on your roof on January 20th in response to their Trump flag.

It is always scary to be doing a show and have no one show up, but almost worse than that is when only a few people show up and they know you. They have never watched you perform live before and instead of them blending in with some sold out crowd and watching you perform, it is just them. They are the audience — you must perform your act directly to a familiar face.

You have lived in Canada, St. Louis, and Cincinnati. Which is funniest?

I grew up in St. Louis. My parents are from Canada, and now I live in Cincinnati.  I have to say that each is funny in a different way, but I really do enjoy seeing Americans make fun of Canadians. Because they think they know so much about Canada but really their knowledge of the country is just what they have gathered from watching a combination of South Park, Letterkenny, and Trailer Park Boys.

Every region is unique and funny in its own way.  But if I was to name one place I would say the funniest is definitely Minneapolis, Minn. Chad Daniels is the best!!

You have a story you tell of a guy who did you wrong in college. Have you ever gotten blowback on that joke or heard from the guy?

I have a joke in my act about getting arrested while I was in college. It is a true story involving a familiar name that audiences seem to recognize, at least audiences in the United States recognize this persons family name.

In Canada everyone might think I am talking about the 2019 Conn Smythe winner that drove a car into a Tim Hortons. I have performed the joke throughout the country and have talked to several people after shows that either know this person personally, grew up with him, or went to college with the both of us. But honestly I am unsure if word has ever gotten back to them about the joke.

It is one of my favorite jokes to tell because it is about a critical time in my life that connects with audiences. Still, many people ask me whether it is a true story or not. Like I would make the whole thing up because I had an unpleasant customer service experience with a company and I made this entire backstory up just to get revenge!!  Now that’s funny!

If you want to hear the story, you have to come to Planet of the Tapes on Sunday, July 11, because I only get into the details when its live and we are not being recorded.

Where is Creig this week?

I am on a lot of great shows this week. I hope you can come out and catch me and all the other funny folks at one or more.

Wednesday, June 23 — Laughs in the Lounge open mic

The Caravan Comedy Club

I will be hosting the Laughs in the Lounge open mic at The Caravan. It’s going to be a great show with special guest Tabari McCoy closing it out, comics coming in from Dayton, Cincinnati and Lexington and some new comics to spice things up.

Tickets are just $5 and are available here.

Thursday, June 24 — Thursday Comedy Showcase

Aloft Louisville Downtown

I’m hosting this show, which features rising California comic Pamela Walt, who is a regular at The Comedy Store in Hollywood.

Also on the strong lineup are Andrew Rudick and Kyle Kemper from Cincinnati, June Dempsey, Jake Hovis, James Ferguson, Alex Whittenburg and Big Daddy Ice.

Tickets are free but are required to ensure proper spacing and are available here.

Friday, June 25 — Wiley’s Comedy Fireworks Competition

Wiley’s Comedy Club, Dayton

I will be competing in the annual Wiley’s Comedy Fireworks Competition in Dayton, Ohio, in the 7:15 p.m. show. If you’re in the area, come on out. It’s a lot of fun and you choose who advances to the finals.

Tickets are $10 and are available here.

June 27 — Sunday Standup Showcase

The Bard’s Town

I will kick off this Louisville Laughs show at The Bard’s Town on June 27 for the Sunday Standup Showcase. The Bard’s Town is one of the coolest and most eclectic spots in town. You can get great food, see plays, comedy, perform karaoke or just have a drink.

The show features Danny Browning and several of our favorite comics, including Misty Stine, Will McKenzie and Sara Butryn.

Tickets are $8 each or $30 for a table that seats four and are available here.

5 questions with Los Angeles comedian Pamela Walt

Pamela Walt is a comedian from Los Angeles, who will be in Louisville for a show at Aloft Louisville Downtown.

Pamela has toured across the country, including a pre-pandemic tour with comedian and writer Lisa Curry.

Pamela will close out the Thursday Comedy Showcase on June 24 at 7:30 p.m. Other comics on the show include Andrew Rudick of Cincinnati and Kyle Kemper of Dayton, Ohio.

Tickets to the show are free and are available here.

Pamela recently took the time to answer 5 Questions from Louisville Laughs.

Live comedy is finally back in Los Angeles. What is that like?

It is still a bit of a mystery as to what shows survived and are coming back. I’ve done a few spots in LA so far. A lot of shows have been selling out. People are really just so happy to go out again.

The audiences are actually excited to be there, which prior to the pandemic was not always the case in LA. Sometimes you’d just get people sitting with their arms crossed in the front row not wanting to laugh.

(Shout out to the late great Brody Stevens. … He was the best at making these folks crack.)

Right now it feels more like NYC audiences in LA though. People who need and want to laugh and are happy to be there. (If you’re an LA audience member reading this, you’re amazing and always have been.)

Pamela Walt

You did some Zoom comedy shows during Covid. How was virtual comedy?

I sat out virtual shows at first and used the time in quarantine to connect with myself. I got bored of that quickly and eventually did Zoom shows.

Zoom was challenging as a lot of people had their cameras and sound off or they forget they didn’t and yelled at their partner and disrupted the show. A lot of awkwardness, especially with internet connections messing with timing. It’s not really the same energy as a live show.

I did like how it was more accessible and anyone in the world could attend. That part was incredible. I also liked that I could wear sweatpants.

How long have you been in LA and what jobs have you held to support your comedy career?

I moved to LA right out of college, so either a long time or just yesterday depending on who you ask. I’ve lived there longer than I’ve done comedy and I’ve done comedy over a decade, and I better not say more in case anyone reading this is good at math.

I’ve worked a lot in TV, film and theater doing costume work over the years as well as the little odd jobs that come with living in LA.

There was one job I remember where I was sewing dresses for a lady on Craigslist for like $1.70 an hour.

Or the time I had to try to sell people shots of mixed drinks at a bar by the beach. Not whiskey shots. We’re talking like shots of White Russians and Margaritas. Nobody wanted that. Talk about having to try to win a crowd over.

What’s your comedy horror story?

There are so many, it’s hard to choose. One show that always comes to mind though was doing a spot in a loud nightclub. They made the middle of the dance floor the “stage” (there was no stage) and the DJ didn’t stop playing.

Absolutely no one listened and people were dancing all around the comics. Everyone kept trying though as if it was normal. It felt like the myth of Sisyphus.

Also just being on the road and having to sleep in roach motels or comic’s basements. (Motels are sometimes safer.) There’s something sort of oddly romantic about all of that in a beat poet kind of way. Also though, I’d rather be in a Four Seasons.

What is bringing you to Louisville?

I have family here that I’m excited to see after this long year. I’m also looking forward to seeing what comedy is like in Louisville. And cicadas. (Addendum: I immediately regret wanting to see cicadas.)

You can find Pamela on Twitter and Instagram

6 questions with Louisville comedian Creig Ewing

Creig Ewing / Photo by Lou Tingle

Creig Ewing is a comedian and show producer from Louisville, Ky.

He is the force behind Louisville Laughs, putting on shows at Aloft Louisville Downtown and scheduling the Wednesday night Laughs in the Lounge open mic at The Caravan Comedy Club.

With businesses opening up, Louisville Laughs is adding Sunday shows at Planet of the Tapes, The Bard’s Town, an open mic at Ten20 Craft Brewery and more announcements to come.

The initial Planet of the Tapes Second Sunday Showcase is June 13 at 7:30 p.m. featuring nationally touring comedian Tim Northern. Tickets are available here.

And as a reward for reading this far, you can use the Promo Code PLANET to get $3 off general admission tickets for Sunday’s show, which are regularly $8.

Creig recently put off his afternoon nap to answer questions he asked himself.

Louisville Laughs: What made you decide to start putting on shows?

Creig Ewing: Who else was going to book me? Plus, I thought I would get my bar tab covered. I was wrong.

What is the best feeling in comedy?

A full room of people enjoying themselves and people laughing at a new joke you’re trying out are the best feelings. … So I am told.

What’s the most frustrating part about booking shows?

People like to wait until the day of the show to buy tickets. So it’s nerve-wracking to not know if you’re going to be performing in front of six or 60 people.

Tim Northern is on Sunday’s show at Planet of the Tapes. How do you know Tim?

When I started in comedy, one of the first opportunities I got was to perform in The Tim Northern Comedy Festival. Tim, who has been doing comedy for years and been on network TV, is very encouraging to the Louisville comedy scene. The festival, to him, was all about supporting and showcasing Louisville comics.

The next year I started working with Tim and others to put on the festival and produce shows and open mics. Covid put everything on hiatus, but we are back putting on shows and people are really ready for comedy.

Tim also is one of those comics who has really smart jokes that I wish I had written.

What tips do you have for new comics wanting to get stage time?

Go to open mics and work on your material. You only get better by being on stage. Don’t fall in love with your jokes. Always be willing to tighten them, rework them or add tags.

Be a good audience member. If you’re at an open mic, stay to listen to the other comics. Laugh. Network a little after.

Go to comedy shows to support others. If someone offers you a spot, don’t say you can do 20 minutes if you only have five. Be reliable.

Also, watch what you put on social media. If you seem like a jerk on your Facebook page, who is going to want to put you on a show?

How do you write a joke?

Take something that is true and lie about it.

Sometimes people have a true story that is funny, and they feel compelled to tell the whole story. Shorten it. Get to the funny parts. Embellish. Go over the top.

A five-minute story with a punchline at the end is going to lose the audience before you get to the punchline.

When someone tells a long stories with no laughs, Tim Northern says, “That guy was up there telling truths.”
