5 questions with Cincinnati comedian Zach Wycuff

Zach Wycuff is a 27-year-old comedian from Cincinnati, who has also worked as a zoo security guard, probation officer and youth minister.

He is one of the funniest and nicest comics in Cincinnati, often making fun of his church-centered upbringing.

He will be performing at the Thursday Comedy Showcase at the Aloft Louisville Downtown on Thursday, April 22. Tickets are free but are required to ensure proper spacing and are available here.

Louisville Laughs: How did you get started in comedy?

Zach: I got started in college after a mentor of mine here in Cincinnati told me about how he used to do improv. I always loved comedy growing up and didn’t realize that it existed in places that weren’t New York or L.A.

I thought there was some sort of Harry Potter school of Jokecraft and Clownery, and until that point, I had been waiting for Seinfeld to show up at my door and say “Yer a comedian, Zachy!”

What is the Cincinnati comedy scene like these days?

The Cincinnati comedy scene is full of so much talent that it’s equal parts inspiring and annoying. Like I would think doing comedy in a mid-sized city like Cincy that I would be some sort of big fish in a little pond but no; there’s a lot of pretty big fish in this mid-sized pond.  Everyone is good and always forcing me to up my game.

I try to make space for the newer folks because the same grace was extended to me as I was coming up and want to do the same for others. Although for some particularly talented youngsters I haven’t entirely ruled out pulling a Nancy Kerrigan.

Much of your comedy pokes gentle fun at your Christian faith and upbringing. Is it difficult to find just the right tone?

Great question! “Gentle poking” sounds like something my youth pastor would teach me to be against. Definitely it is.

I make fun of the thing because I love it and am very much in it. I like Jesus but don’t necessarily love all the BS people try to attach to His name.

So it’s hard to sometimes say what I mean in a way that works for my mom and also doesn’t sound like I just came from youth group. But the fun part is figuring it out!

You have been a probation officer and a youth minister. How are those jobs alike?

I’ve found most of the jobs I’ve had have been like being a wet blanket. I’m a heat-seeking missile for fun; I find it and blow it up.

I also think I really just want the best for people and want to do my best to gently guide them in a way that feels honoring and loving, but sometimes that can feel like dad coming downstairs to the sleepover and telling everyone to turn off the Nintendo and go to sleep.

Have you ever performed at a show in a bar or some other venue and thought to myself, “This is not my crowd?”

Despite my background, I feel very at home in a bar or wherever. The worst time I had with a “this isn’t my crowd” moment was when I was hired to perform for a function celebrating volunteers at a local library. What they didn’t tell me is that the gig would be for primarily 65-80 year olds in a brightly-lit room before noon.

If you were making a formula for a bad comedy show, this would be it.

Thankfully their vision wasn’t good enough to see my pit-sweat through my shirt. It was the longest 20 minutes of my life. The worst was when I would make fun of myself and then they would laugh, because I knew they could hear me and it wasn’t a hearing-aid issue.

I talked to a lady in the front row about jazz for 5 minutes and she got the biggest laughs of the set. I should’ve guessed they wouldn’t like me. Librarians main job is telling people to be quiet. I wish they had told me to do that.

You can follow Zach at @wach_zycuff on Instagram and Twitter. He will tell you jokes that are super funny if you’re not a librarian! Thanks friends!

Mandee McKelvey is the special guest for the Caravan open mic Wednesday

The Laughs in the Lounge open mic on Wednesday, March 31, is extra special with special guest Mandee McKelvey closing out the show.

Mandee is a comic and actor who has performed her own one-woman show and often portrays comical versions of real and fictional characters in the popular Character Assassination roasts.

The show will be hosted by Jonathon Walter Gregg and features established and new comics. Also on the lineup are three working comics from Indianapolis — Nolan Miller, Jake Smith and Ryne Ross.

Tickets are $5 and are available here.

5 Questions with Momics! comedian Katy Bevins

Katy Bevins is a Louisville-based Appalachian transplant who started comedy in 2009.

She is a married mother of two boys, employed full time and terrible at coming up with bios about herself. She enjoys gardening, managing high levels of anxiety, and regrets downloading TikTok.

She will be appearing on the Momics! show on Thursday, April 1 at Aloft Louisville Downtown. Tickets are $10 or $30 to reserve a table that seats up to four and are available here.

She agreed to answer five questions from Creig Ewing of Louisville Laughs.

How did you get your start doing comedy?

I started in 2009 after an acquaintance from high school suggested I go with him to do the open night at Comedy Off Broadway in Lexington. I killed it, and it unfortunately made me think they’d always go well, but I was hooked.

You have a lot going on. How does comedy fit in?

I juggle comedy and family by not spreading myself too thin. Comedy is a side hobby for me and not a career path. I decline shows that I can’t perform in. I want comedy to never feel like work.

I have “quit” comedy at least twice and both were related to being pregnant.

Were you able to perform much in the past year?

I haven’t been able to perform much. At the beginning of shutdown, I had a 4-year-old and a 7-month-old. Getting out and performing was too risky. If my husband or me were to get sick, there would be nobody to come help us.

My last show before the shutdown was on Leap Day 2020. I’ve performed twice since then.

Much of your humor comes from your life and family. How do you decide what to say on stage?

I don’t like to sit down and write things. It drives me insane. I will sometimes be thinking of something mundane and if there’s a morsel of a way to make it funny, I will sort of obsess over it until I can 100% make it funny.

I don’t usually write anything down until the day of the show, usually in the parking lot right before. Years ago I got an entire bit of how my husband doesn’t shut drawers.

The comics on Thursday’s show are all moms. What kind of humor can the audience expect?

I think the audience can expect pandemic mom humor, non-pandemic humor, and of course the light hearted jabs at our partners and kids.

Featured comic: Fort Wayne’s Julie Heckman

Fort Wayne comedian Julie Heckman is a 30-something mom, wife and small business owner whose family still calls her “Kid.”

Her sharp and witty comedy could be described as tastefully vulgar, like reading a classic novel, but with f-bombs. Self deprecating, honest, insightful and at times goofy, Julie is happiest when making people laugh.

She will be in the Momics! comedy show on April 1 at the Aloft Louisville Downtown where all the comics are moms. Tickets ($10 per person or $30 for a table that seats up to four) are available here.

Julie also can be seen emceeing at the Fort Wayne Comedy Club and has performed in the MMJ Comedy Festival in 2018 and 2019, as well as the Live Laughs Festival in 2018 and 2019.

Julie also produces a podcast called “Is This A Bit?” where she features different friends and comedians each week to tell true funny stories.

Comedians & friends tell true life funny stories, and see if they are good enough to become bits.
